If this little ‘survey’ so to speak doesn’t show the vast differences in my musical tastes, I don’t quite know what will. When I looked at the top 25 most played songs list, I was shocked. If I changed the format just a little bit, and put songs I actually like listening to instead of the ones that were played numerous times while I was intoxicated at a party, we’d get something a little bit different. Nonetheless, it still shows the variety of music that I listen to on a daily basis. This is why after finishing this, I am going to be resetting the play counts on most of the songs on that playlist to get rid of any confusion this may have caused.
Anyways, I suppose from here I can go into my ‘guilty pleasure’ bands. If we look up the definitions of those 2 words, we can deduce that the definition of the word ‘guilty pleasure’ would be something along the lines of this:
Guilty pleasure - adj – justly chargeable with fault or error (guilty) while being happily satisfied about it. (pleasure)
Now this makes no sense at all, I know. And in the long run, it will just prove my point. I listen to many different types of music. Though the majority of what I enjoy is considered in the hardcore/metal/grindcore genres, I do enjoy many other styles such as indie and acoustic. There are bands that people don’t like, or, in most cases, just won’t admit to liking even though they really do like them. I suppose it’s time for some examples and explanations.
Fall Out Boy – Alright. This is the one that most people do really like but feel ashamed to admit. Why though? There music is so catchy and fun. And I really do like his voice. Favourite song: This Ain’t a Scene. Favourite line: “I am an arms dealer, fitting you with weapons in the form of words.”
Cute Is What We Aim For - Not their old album. Their new one, Rotation. It’s so much better than their last one. It’s catchy and even has some good lyrics to it. Favourite song: “[Untitled]” Favourite lyric: “This is love and this is lust I made it to be the best. And if I were to be the best maybe you would just… This is love and this is lust now which one do I trust?”
Boys Like Girls – The only reason I will give for this is that their music is catchy. It’s fun to listen to really loud while you’re driving. Favourite song: Thunder. Favourite lyric: “Today is a winding road that’s taking me to places that I didn’t want to go.”
I have more I’m sure, but I don’t really feel like thinking about it too much.
Now, guilty pleasure bands are still bands that we really enjoy listening to. Why should we be ashamed of listening to music we like? Just because someone might not agree with you isn’t a good reason. And just because someone might look at you differently for liking a band shouldn’t be a legitimate reason either. If music makes you happy there should be no reason to pretend you’re better than it. Good music is good music. Don’t be ashamed of what you like.
(note to readers. I wrote this while suffering from a reaction to medication and also allergies. Couldn’t think quite clearly enough)
